Stage 1 Modules

Module 1: The Innate Immune System

The origins of herbal medicine from prehistory to modern times. The cells, tissues and systems of the human body. Inflammation and infection, with holistic approaches to the treatment of fevers. Common infective agents, including viruses and bacteria. The description, habitat, cultivation, folklore, active ingredients and medicinal properties of yarrow, elderflowers and catmint. Sourcing and handling herbs for medicinal use.

Module 2: The Circulation

Homeostasis – the maintenance of normal functioning of the human body and the "self-correcting" nature of its systems. The heart, blood and lymphatic systems and their roles in delivery of nutrients to the body cells and elimination of waste products. Cardiovascular disease risk reduction through diet and lifestyle. The description, habitat, cultivation, folklore, active ingredients and medicinal properties of horseradish, garlic, hawthorn, lime flowers, cayenne, and ginger. Preparation and use of herbal medicines, with focus on infusions and decoctions.

Module 3: The Urinary System

The ability of the body to heal itself. The urinary system. Diseases of the kidney and urinary tract, including infection, prostate problems, kidney stones and their predisposing factors. The description, habitat, cultivation, folklore, active ingredients and medicinal properties of parsley, horsetail, juniper berry, bearberry, couch grass, cranberry and nettle root. Detailed preparation of a ‘cold & flu’ tea and a dandelion root decoction.

There are three Modules in Stage 1, each covering a different body system. Each Module is divided into six ‘Lessons’ which are:

  • Philosophy and Principles
  • Anatomy and Physiology
  • Pathology
  • Diagnosis
  • Materia Medica
  • Home Pharmacy
